Just watched an "Award winning" sci-fi short. Uninspired, unimaginative, following the same tired route and getting us nowhere. The point of Sci-fi is meant to be to use the fantastical possibilities of future worlds to explore the human condition. It often reflects our concerns and politics of the day. So why are we still getting trite crap about 'the AI that takes over the world", "the last robot after humans are gone", "lunar base under siege"? We've done that. We've done that a million times before. Go to a fetish club and watch what people do to express themselves, given a completely accepting and creative audience. Watch Drag Race and see people transform themselves. Visit a convention and look at how people wish the future could be. None of this happens in modern sci-fi. It's all sexless catsuits, and bland uniforms. Nothing is celebratory. Nothing is truly deviant (yes, your body horror is just like every other body horror). Everyone sticks to their roles.
